Film Criticism Labs Session 2

For our second Film Criticism Labs session, we will be joined by film critic Sasha Han. We look forward to seeing all of you again!

✏️ Sasha Chew’s bio: 

Sasha Han seeks to reify the fugitive effects of looking through language. Broadly, her interests lie in examining the circulation of images in Southeast Asia. An alumni of critics labs at the Locarno International Film Festival, Far East Film Festival and the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), she worked with SGIFF as part of the editorial team for its annual Atlas magazine and as an external reviewer. Her writing has been published by Asian Film Archive, In Review Online, MARG1N magazine, and the Singapore Film Society.

Film Criticism Session 3

For our third Film Criticism Labs session, participants should come having already watched Barbie (dir. Greta Gerwig, 2023). We will also be joined by writer, journalist and communications consultant, Jolie Han. We look forward to seeing all of you again!

✏️ Jolie Han’s bio: 

Jolie Fan is a writer, journalist and communications consultant working at the intersection of scholarly investigation and strategic communications. Multitudinal and a lover of the peripheral, her research focuses on the political economy of Southeast Asian media and transnational encounters of culture (emic and etic) as mediated by power relations and canon formations. Her essays and criticisms have appeared in EasternKicks, Duart, the Asian Film Archive, SinemaSG, Singapore International Film Festival, published in a peer-reviewed journal 'Journalism' (SAGE) and The Undergraduate Awards Library. She was also selected as 1 of 10 aspiring journalism fellows from a global pool of candidates at the Far East Film Festival Campus 2022.

Film Criticism Labs Session 5

For our final Film Criticism Labs session for this semester, there will be a panel discussion on Programming and Criticism. We will also be joined by film critic Morris Yang, freelance video editor and film programmer Renee Ng, and Malaysian-born Singapore-based film programmer and critic Lee Ping Ming. We look forward to seeing all of you there!

✏️ Morris Yang’s bio: 

Morris Yang is a film critic currently majoring in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at the National University of Singapore. He has written for Film Inquiry and The Parrot Review, and currently serves as Associate Editor for In Review Online. He also does film programming from time to time, having worked with the Singapore Film Society, Fantasia International Film Festival, and the International Cinephile Society, of which he is a voting member. He is a voting member of the Golden Globes.

✏️ Renee Ng’s bio: 

Renee Ng is a freelance video editor and film programmer based in Singapore, interested in the socio-cultural relationships that films and cinephilia share with the world. As a programmer for the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF), she contributed to the festival’s official selections, leading the curation and publicity of the festival’s first VR film programme (2022), Singapore Panorama Shorts (2023) and SGIFF Family Film Day (2023). Renee is also an editor, with credits that include the NYFA award-winning film Dirty Laundry (2022). She publishes reviews with Asian Movie Pulse. 

✏️ Lee Ping Ming’s bio: 

Lee Peng Ming is a Malaysian-born Singapore-based film programmer and critic. He is editor-in-chief of Wuben Film Magazine and assistant editor-in-chief for Exposure Print. He contributes as a freelance columnist to Lianhe Zaobao. As programmer, he has curated at the Asian Film Archive, Singapore Film Society, NTU Film Society, Perspectives Film Festival, and contributed to the Singapore International Film Festival.
